Our Feminist Calendar<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Bakura refers to the first fruits and vegetables to arrive at the market, the earliest harvests, and beginnings, such as the first work of a writer, an artist, or an inventor. It also denotes the first fruit seen on the land. For thousands of years, the New Year in our region began on the first of Nisan (April), marking the start of spring. The days of that month were dedicated to celebrating Akitu: the arrival of spring and the time to sow barley and wheat to secure sustenance and life. In various historical references, \u201cNisan\u201d carries the meaning of bakura, the beginning and the start of movement, in the Akkadian language.

Time has always been closely connected to women and to nature, through the cycles of both. The first attempts to establish a timeline were created by women, who relied on their bodily cycles and divided time into 28-day periods. Women and nature have long been intertwined through the tides of the moon. This is how we want this calendar to exist: as part of a chain that connects women to the land, and reconnects us with our cultural heritage in this region, with agriculture, seeds, and life.

This calendar could have been designed by one person and completed in less than a month. Instead, it unfolded over four months, moving from hand to hand among women with different experiences, while taking into account the trainer\u2019s care responsibilities toward family members, children, and elders.

We came to realize that the very process of producing the calendar reflects the daily and recurring challenges women face. As a result, the process itself became as important as the final object. The conversations, discoveries, moments of sharing and vulnerability, and collective reflection were just as meaningful as the calendar we now hold. The time invested by Mayda and the participants: Hala, Lama, Leen, Reem, Marie-Rose, Bateel, Lea, and Jana, as well as Mayda\u2019s cooking and hosting us in her home to complete the work, was as valuable as the visuals we created.

Across six sessions, we discussed what intersectional feminism means and the role it plays in our lives. We also worked on producing visual artwork for each month of the year using simple materials, without relying on digital applications.

Although we are launching this calendar in January, we propose Nisan (April) as the true New Year of our region, simply because we refuse to follow a calendar that does not speak to us.

At a time when Zionist colonialism is killing us and plundering our history and memory in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, we want this initiative to serve as a deeper attachment to land and memory, and as a form of resistance.

We hope this calendar will be the bakura of beautiful things in your lives, the beginning of a wider, deeper, and more expansive sisterhood and kinship; the sowing of your barley, its growth, and its flourishing.

We also hope to open a new space of communication between us, where you can share your experiences with the calendar, your favorite recipes, your thoughts, or simply stay connected and participate in our events, which aim to weave shared stories year after year. Our plan is to collect these small seeds, recipes, artworks, reflections, into a shared volume that we will email to you once it has grown into our collective story: a meeting point for those who love land, history, and feminist kinship.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
